Extra Weight can be Harmful

Updated: Nov 30, 2023

With the recent cold snap, we have had, a lot of us are turning to comfort food – and just like us, our furry friends often LOVE to eat. But did you know that over 40% of dogs and 30% of cats in Australia are overweight or obese?

While you might think that a little bit of extra squishiness to cuddle wouldn’t cause too much harm, the reality is that every extra kilogram your pet carries can cause significant health issues that can affect their quality of life and longevity. We often see pets with osteoarthritis, diabetes, UTIs, pancreatitis, and skin disease caused or exacerbated by being overweight.

So how do you know if your pet is overweight? Just ask us! Every visit your fur baby has with us, they are assessed for the Body Condition Score, and we will be able to advise you if your pet is an appropriate weight. Alternatively, you can use a Body Condition Score scale at home to assess your pet yourself. Ideally, they should have a visible waistline from above, and their ribs should be easily felt but not seen.

If your pet is overweight, you should ensure they are being fed an appropriate diet. Considering the huge differences in our pets’ shapes and sizes, life stages, and many of our pets suffering from other ailments like dental disease, arthritis and gastrointestinal sensitivities, it can often be daunting to sift through the seemingly endless selection of food available.

Luckily, our friends at Royal Canin have made this process much easier. They have developed a rationing tool that we can use to determine which diet would best suit your pet’s needs and develop an individually tailored plan with high quality, complete and balanced food to help them live their best lives.

If you are curious to learn how food can benefit your pet or would like to know how much you should really be feeding, please don’t hesitate to call so our team can help you out.
